Coffee shop: morning speed, hot cups, cold drinks
A coffee shop has two separate service moments: the morning queue and the seated breakfast. In the queue the napkin is taken one-handed and the fold has to hold; at the table it is part of the service. As cold drinks take a bigger share, straws stop being a seasonal line.

Two service moments in one room
In the morning queue the customer takes the cup, grabs a napkin and often never sits down. By midday the same room is a breakfast venue with tables. The two moments do not need the same napkin: one is taken one-handed and goes under the cup or into a pocket, the other opens on a table.
The napkin under a hot cup
A napkin under the cup takes condensation and drips — it works while wet. At that point holding together when wet matters more than the fold. An embossed napkin keeps its structure when damp and is less likely to stick to the surface.
Cold drinks made straws a year-round line
As iced coffee grows, straws stop being a summer item. A bamboo straw can carry print on the body, and the sleeve can be printed too; because the sleeve is the first thing to reach the customer's hand, most venues put the print there.
What you pick, and why
The straw ban separates paper from bamboo
Plastic straws are banned across the EU, and the replacement goes by a different name in each market — in France the paper one is searched as `paille en carton` and the bamboo one as `paille en bambou`. What sets bamboo apart is that it does not soften; that is exactly where paper straws generate complaints in a long cold drink.
Morning speed shapes the artwork
Nobody in a queue unfolds a napkin to look at it. For the print to be read it has to be visible while the napkin is still folded — which makes the fold the first decision, not a detail chosen afterwards.

Frequently asked
- Which face of the napkin is printed?
- The face that stays outside when folded. The fold determines where the print goes, so the two are chosen together.
- Do bamboo straws soften in an iced drink?
- No. The softening that paper straws show in a long cold drink does not happen with bamboo.
- Can the straw sleeve be printed?
- Yes. Most venues put the print on the sleeve, because it is the first surface the customer touches.
