Mediterranean bowl bar: the buyer asks for the certificate

Bowl concepts position themselves on health and sustainability, and their customers read claims through that lens. It changes procurement: compostability certification, a PFAS declaration and material composition become part of the buying process. The second technical issue is how olive oil behaves on paper.

Claims get read harder here

A customer of a venue positioned on health and sustainability reads its packaging claims the same way. A wrong or undocumented claim costs more in this segment than in others. So bowl operators ask for documentation when they buy: which standard, which body, and can the number be verified.

Compostable and biodegradable are not the same word

Biodegradable says a material will break down eventually, with no stated time or condition. Compostable means turning into compost under defined conditions within a defined period, and it is measurable. EN 13432 covers packaging and EN 14995 non-packaging items using the same test protocol; most single-use tableware falls under the second.

PFAS is a separate heading, and urgent in the US

PFAS in food packaging is banned in more than twelve US states and the scope keeps widening. A kraft sleeve sits squarely inside it. The declaration is given per material — either a supplier declaration or an accredited laboratory report. Bowl operators have started asking for it in Europe too.

Olive oil does not behave like frying oil

Frying oil makes paper translucent; olive oil pools more slowly over a wider area. Collecting at the rim of the bowl and transferring to the napkin, the mark is larger but lighter. Ply therefore does not have to be as high as in a venue that fries.

The print speaks the language of the material

The packaging language of bowl venues is natural: kraft, pale wood, one colour. Inside that language, embossing and a single colour read more consistently than a multi-colour design. A print that covers the wood's own tone reads backwards in this segment.

Frequently asked

What documentation is asked for?
EN 13432 or EN 14995 for compostability, the relevant food-contact declaration, and on the US side a PFAS declaration. Whether the certificate covers the whole item or one component should be asked separately.
Do your items break down in a home compost?
EN 13432 measures industrial composting conditions and says nothing about home composting. Home certification is separate and has to be requested on its own.
Do you have a PFAS declaration?
It is collected per material. Which line already has a declaration is stated in writing at quotation; nothing is declared where it is not held.
