The hand goes into the food

Fish looks like a knife-and-fork dish, but in practice the hand is constantly involved: bones are picked, shellfish is cracked, lemon is squeezed. The napkin on the table does not answer this, because the problem is not dirt — it is smell.

Dry paper does not lift the smell

The compounds that leave a fish smell are water-soluble, so dry paper does not remove them from the skin. The wet wipe does, and that is why the lemon-scented version is so common — the citric side works on what is left. It makes seafood one of the few venue types where the wet wipe is not optional.

The format is specified large

At a table serving shellfish the small sachet is not enough. The large format covers the whole hand and the wrist. Asking for a second wipe at the same table is routine, and operators plan the per-cover count accordingly.

What you pick, and why

A pale ground is not a problem here

In greasy, sauce-heavy venues a white ground is risky because it shows marks. Seafood is different: the sauce share is low, the linen is already pale, and embossing on a light ground matches the language of the table. There is no need to move the napkin to a dark ground.

The wipe sachet is a decision of its own

The sachet both holds the scent in and carries the print. Its layer structure is a separate heading on the recycling side and is asked for as documentation during procurement. In France, pre-moistened wipes have sat in their own producer responsibility chain since 1 July 2025.
