UV printing versus offset

In offset, ink dries by absorption and oxidation, plates have to be made, and the setup cost falls as it spreads across a larger run. In UV, ink cures instantly under ultraviolet light and setup is lighter, so it stays economical at lower quantities. The difference is not quality but quantity and drying time.

Why quantity decides it

Plate making in offset is a fixed cost divided across every unit printed. At three thousand units that share dominates the unit price; at three hundred thousand it disappears. What makes UV economical on short runs is not the press itself but the lightness of the setup.

What instant curing buys

UV ink leaves the lamp already cured, so folding and cutting can follow immediately. This is a large part of what shortens lead time. Offset needs drying time, and drying time occupies space in a schedule.

On kraft stock

Kraft is absorbent and coloured. In both methods light colours read weakly against it, and a single dark colour gives the cleanest result. The choice of method does not change that.

How the decision gets made

Quantity, number of colours and lead time are read together. Low volume and a short deadline point to UV; high volume and strict colour fidelity point to offset. Where the case is borderline, a sample is printed and compared.

Is UV printing food-contact safe?
Yes, with compliant ink and varnish. What decides it is the conformity declaration for the ink, not the method.
Is digital printing the same as UV?
No. Digital describes printing without plates; UV describes how the ink cures. A digital press can use UV ink.
